So, a lot of people always ask me, “Brandon, how do you have so much time to do all these things like dancing, working, having a fun life, and being happy?”
The truth is that I take one thing at a time and only worry about what I am doing in the moment. Believe it or not it is hard for most people, including me, to be present at any one moment. Thoughts are constantly flying around in people’s heads and we are in a world with so many choices these days and people are so worried about making the right choice that it paralyzes them. At times i give all that I am to what I am doing at the moment and not worry about the past or the future; at other times it is harder to do that.
Do not get me wrong. I have my days where I struggle to do this. I am after all only human. I have my highs and lows and in between’s and forget that it is fairly simple, but do not get that mistaken with easy, because it is anything but easy to do that. People always have things on their minds and ruminate about the past, the future or the problems that they have in life. Rumination is basically negative thoughts going over in the mind repeatedly and often casually or slowly and it is a waste of time because it preoccupies your time with thinking about things that honestly do not really matter. One thought will turn into another thought and eventually it will grow from this little tiny thing and avalanche into something big and unnecessary. We all have the same 86,400 seconds in a day and you can decide to be present at every one of those seconds or be present sometimes and be in your head the rest of the time.
The majority of people ruminate so much that they convince themselves they are not good enough and cannot even get a good night sleep. They think about the regrets of the past and the worries of the future that they are not able to grasp the moment they are living in. Being happy and successful is about being content with where you are in life at the moment and always strive to grow one percent every single day and that eventually adds up. There is no magic formula to doing what you want and be happy, it just takes persistence and consistency.
I like this metaphor by Earl Nightingale:
Your thoughts are like fresh soil ready to put whatever you want in it to grow. You can plant weeds and they will grow or you can plant fresh vegetables and flowers and they will grow as well. Whatever you put in your soil will bloom if you keep watering it. So make sure you are very careful about what grows. Do not be complacent and let your mind go on autopilot because it will take the route of least resistance. Growth requires friction and friction comes from resistance. Take control of your mind and you will take control of your life!
I will leave you with this quote from Earl Nightingale, “We can let circumstances rule us, or we can take charge and rule our lives from within”.
